Poetry Sharing: Thank you, Ms. Kay Bartley. I hope this gets back to you someday. You opened my writing world to poetry. Each Friday, I will share a poem I have written.

I wrote this poem for my college creative writing class. The instructions were to write a poem based on a photograph. I found a photo of me, my brother, and a half-dozen cousins. We had just returned from taking a hike, and decided since we were all so dirty, we would all climb into the bathtub clothes and all for a picture.

Dirty

Everyone

Needs a bath.

It’s been a good day.

Two years old to eighteen

None

Could smile more.

We’ve been hiking.

We’re tired

Starving

Refusing to quit.

We could

Slip in the mud

Splash through the creek

Slide down the slopes

All over again.

Could you stop us?

Could you stop

The Kids?

Try

Have you ever written poetry or prose based on a picture?

Honestly, I have nothing to report. I haven’t been sleeping enough, and my motivation is slacking. The decluttering hasn’t really happened this past week.

But! There are reasons to rejoice (as always)! Even though my house is still ninety-five percent messy, we’ve been eating at our dining room table to two weeks now. I’m also maintaining a cleaner kitchen. Overall, I think I’m getting into better habits. Lately, I’m just struggling. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you may have noticed that I don’t seem to have it together like I did. I’m tired!

So I am trying to sleep better. A few late nights throw decent sleep schedules out the window. I’ve also stopped drinking soda (again), and if I happen to have a little bit now close to bedtime I’m awake until two am. Caffeine is strong stuff! I’m considering this my adjustment period.

Here’s a glass of water to next week when I have more to report!

I LOVE My Kids!

Flights of Fancy: I love telling stories! I take this day as my opportunity to share my stories. I may narrate a dream I’ve had or some imaginative adventure my kids took me on or a cherished memory from a time before now. I hope you enjoy my stories as much as I enjoy the retelling of them.

Last Sunday night as we ate supper, my oldest son pointed out that we haven’t counted our day yet. I reminded him that we only count the days we do schoolwork, and we don’t do schoolwork on Sunday.

Teasingly, I asked, “Do you want to do a bunch of schoolwork before bed?”

“Yeah,” he responded.

I laughed out loud, and the conversation moved on to other things around the table.

A while later when I told the kids it was time to get ready for bed, Little Man said, “Aw! No schoolwork!”

Here is how we keep up with how many days we’ve done so far.

Does it amaze you the things your children love to do?

Picture Picking

Project Progress: I’m not the only creative type with more projects than I can ever complete. Right? Right? (Say, “Right.”) Each week, I commit to working at least fifteen minutes on one of my projects, and I will share my progress with you here.

I’m still working at that custom planner of mine, number thirteen on my list. I hope after making the first one the years after will be easier. ;-)

I worked more on the devotional section. I think I finished with January. I created a prototype for the front cover. I want to find a meandering path to photograph for the background. I also began looking through my pictures for some nice ones to include throughout. I need to look at prices for print-on-demand publishing before deciding I want to include too many so my planner doesn’t cost an excessive amount.

Here is one I think I’ll use in the Spring. Dogwoods aren’t only an East Tennessee thing, right?

How are your projects coming along?

Compost Heap: If anyone enjoys hanging out on twitter, I’m there too! (@RebeccaBurgener) I’m not good at the conversation I see happening there, but I do read and visit some of the links. This information enters my internal compost heap where new things grow. Each Sunday I will share some of the processing from a link I enjoyed.

Today’s link comes from @LizCoughlan. She shared an article about traveling to South America and watching penguins.

This sounds like such a blast, and I wouldn’t even have to get cold! ;-)

@LizCoughlan calls herself a global nomad. That would be a dream come true to me. I can only imagine the educational experiences my children would have. That does’t even mention the things my husband and I would learn. Is it possible to be a global nomad with young children? How would I go about routines and schedules? Little children need naps. Would they just learn to sleep anywhere?

So many questions and dreams to dream. I can’t jump on the global nomad bus today, but until that might be possible, I’ll enjoy the penguins at the nearby aquarium.

Meet Maggie.

Near or far from “home,” where do you travels take you?

Baby that Baby!

So! Your best girlfriend just announced she has a blessing on the way sometime in the next nine months. You want to throw a baby shower, but you begin sweating as you try to figure out not only how to pull it off but also how to make it memorable and fun.

The first nightmare is the schedule. How in the world can you get every important person in this woman’s life together all at the same time before the baby graduates from college? Don’t try! Babies are blessings that have room for more than one celebration. Get some help from others and have more than one party that includes different circles your friend walks through.

Remember! You do not have to be the only host. Share the opportunity to bless New Mom. Work with the other hosts to create an invitation from sites like Tiny Prints that mentions all the parties you want to have and invite guests to attend as many as they like.

Here are ten ideas to celebrate New Baby and help New Mom.

1) Stock New Mom’s freezer. Anyone who has had a baby knows the postpartum period consists of “Feed baby. Change baby. Try to sleep.” There is rarely time for a shower, let alone putting meals on the table. Research Once a Month Cooking, have a plan, and fill New Mom’s freezer with easy and nutritious meals.

2) Right along with stocking the freezer, host a Pampered Chef party and give New Mom the prize pack. When she feels up to cooking again, she can have some pretty new tools to cook with.

3) Gather the crafty people in New Mom’s life, and create a group project for the baby. You could sew a quilt, crochet booties and hats, knit teeny-tiny sweaters, and more. The gift is only limited by the skills of the crafters.

4) Spoil New Mom! Give her a complete spa treatment including manicures and pedicures. It will be awhile before she has time for such things again.

5) Celebrate the older siblings. Get them shirts that say, “I’m the big sister,” or, “I’m the big brother.” Older siblings can feel left out when it comes to preparing for a new baby. Make them feel special too. Tell them all the advantages of being the older one, and teach them some skill that they can use to help mom after the baby comes.

6) Decorate the nursery. Decide on a theme and create a plan with New Mom. Then go! This keeps New Mom from having to deal with paint fumes or being too long on her feet. Give her a nursery to enjoy without breaking her own back to get it.

7) Many hands make light work. New Mom is probably realizing how difficult it is to clean house the closer her new arrival comes. Come and give her house a good top to bottom cleaning. This would be especially wonderful to do while New Mom is in the hospital meeting New Baby.

8 ) Name that baby! Parents agonize over this job. A name is so important. A person’s name should sound like music to that person. Try to make the process a little more fun. First have a race to see who can come up with a name for every letter of the alphabet. Then get out the baby name book, and look up the meanings of everyone’s favorites.

9) Build a scrapbook about New Mom. Have everyone bring a picture of New Mom and a letter to the baby. Each person can design at least one page. Put it all together. Voila! New Mom will keep it always.

10) Pretend you’re all artists. Pull out the markers, crayons, colored pencils, chalk, and whatever else and have each person illustrate how they think New Baby will look. This would be a great activity for older siblings to participate in as well. Then use a website like MorphThing to digitally predict New Baby’s looks. Later, add a real picture of New Baby.

So there you have it. The road to motherhood has been traveled many times before, you can still make it a unique journey for your friend, New Mom. She will not forget.

I wrote this blog post while participating in the TwitterMoms and Tiny Prints blogging program, making me eligible to get a Tiny Prints gift code worth $50, plus 25 FREE Tiny Prints greeting cards—a total gift value of $149.75! For more information on how you can participate, click here.

The Sofa

Poetry Sharing: Thank you, Ms. Kay Bartley. I hope this gets back to you someday. You opened my writing world to poetry. Each Friday, I will share a poem I have written.

I introduced you to the Sofa in this post, and I shared one poem about it last Poetry Sharing Friday. I have one more poem to share about my special rock. It comes in my favorite poetic style, a haiku. I wrote this poem for my college Creative Writing teacher, Mr. Eddy Francisco.

A big rock sits there

Beckoning, “Be company.

Come, and sit here too.”

Treasures Lost and Found

Clutterbug Confessions - Clutter cramps creativity! I am a clutterbug. My husband is a clutterbug. My children are clutterbugs-in-training. I am determined to change this trend and maybe find my house too. Then I won’t feel so guilty when I work on my creative projects.

One of the fun things about decluttering is finding treasures that you long ago gave up on ever finding. (The hope is that you find them before you replace them.) Here are a couple we have recently found.

This is a gift we bought for my daughter because I wanted it. ;-) I had an obsession with the Care Bears as a kid, and so Little Lady has a few Care Bear toys. Okay, I’ll be honest. If I was less cluttered and more organized, her room would probably be decorated Care Bear style, but I haven’t destroyed, er, found new homes for, enough of my clutter to think about buying more stuff for any kind of theme. Instead Oopsie Bear just has a few friends that Little Lady loves on. We found him in a box that I don’t remember packing, and for days my starry eyed daughter hugged him to her and said, “I feel like I just got him!”

Here is something I was thrilled to find.

I didn’t turn the way I should have while my daughter took my picture to show more of my Hip Hammock, but I was so excited to find it I sent an “I found my hip hammock!” text to two people and twitter. Little Lady graciously allowed me to use her doll that my mother made her for the picture since my husband and I have a policy against putting pictures of our children up on my public blog.

I have been looking for this since I found out I was pregnant with Littlest Man. It was wonderful for my oldest son who has been a bit bigger than everyone else his entire life. That meant a much heavier child that wasn’t walking yet to carry around. I used my Hip Hammock quite a bit until he really began walking well on his own. When I first found it I immediately tried sticking Littlest Man in it.

He didn’t like it.

But! Now that he’s seen a doll play in it, he decided he wanted a turn, and after a fifteen minute ride I had to make him get down. So, the next time we go somewhere that includes plenty of walking, I can carry Littlest Man hands free. :-)

Have you found any lost treasures lately?

Our Dream Home

Flights of Fancy: I love telling stories! I take this day as my opportunity to share my stories. I may narrate a dream I’ve had or some imaginative adventure my kids took me on or a cherished memory from a time before now. I hope you enjoy my stories as much as I enjoy the retelling of them.

I will admit I spend more time dreaming about my “Dream Home” than I should. I want a comfortable window seat facing the east in my kitchen and another in the master bedroom facing the west. Those are my highest priority qualifications, but there are many other things that float around in my head under wants for this earthly object. Dreaming like I do can be inspiring, but it also sometimes prevents me from enjoying the blessings of today.

My children have blessed my life in a huge way, and one day they built me my Ultimate Dream Home.

Isn’t is beautiful! I especially love that the bathroom is inside a tree with a big red flower on top. Littlest Man adores the outdoor feel of his crib. We’re moving in ASAP. Please don’t send any housewarming gifts. We really don’t have any room. If you insist though, cash is always acceptable. ;-)

Have your children ever built you a dream home?

Inspire Me!

Project Progress: I’m not the only creative type with more projects than I can ever complete. Right? Right? (Say, “Right.”) Each week, I commit to working at least fifteen minutes on one of my projects, and I will share my progress with you here.

I’m still working at number thirteen on my list. I’m am determined to have this custom planner created by January 1st! I’ve gathered more quotes. I now have one hundred seventy-three writing quotes and four hundred thirty-eight inspirational quotes. So! I have to stop looking up quotes and move on with other things.

Before moving on I must share a favorite inspirational quote that a friend of mine, Angie, sent to me on a card.

Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when I know there are footprints on the moon.  -Paul Brandt

I don’t believe I had heard that quote before it landed in my mailbox and made my day. Angie has this fabulous business about sending out cards that you can read about here. She uses it to make the days of many people around her.

Other than enjoying reading too many quotes, I also worked a bit on the “My Daily Bread” section of my dream planner. I want to include scripture as a part of each day’s plan so I’m working on planning out a year’s worth of Bible study.

Much to do, much to do, and January will be here soon.

What work have you done on your creative projects this week?
